If you've booked your first laser hair removal appointment — or you're close to it — and you're feeling a little nervous, that's completely normal. Most people walk in not quite sure what to expect, and walk out wondering why they waited so long. The unknown is the only intimidating part, so let's take it off the table. Here's exactly what your first visit with us looks like, start to finish, with no surprises.
Before You Come In: How to Prep
A little preparation makes your first session smoother and more effective. In the days before your appointment:
Shave the treatment area about 24 hours beforehand. The laser targets the hair below the surface, so you want the follicle intact but no hair on top to absorb the energy. Clean-shaven is exactly right.
Don't wax, pluck, thread, or use depilatory creams for about four weeks before. These remove the root the laser needs to target, which makes the session far less effective. Shaving is the only hair removal to do in the lead-up.
Stay out of the sun and skip self-tanner for a couple of weeks before. Laser and freshly tanned or sunburned skin don't mix, and this matters more here in Florida than almost anywhere.
Come with clean, bare skin. No lotion, oil, makeup, deodorant, or sunscreen on the area the day of — just freshly cleansed skin.
Make a note of any medications. Some medications and supplements increase light sensitivity, so jot down anything you're taking to mention at your consultation.
Step 1: Your Consultation
Your first visit starts with a real conversation, not a rushed intake. We'll sit down with you to look at your skin and hair, talk through your medical history, and understand what you're hoping to achieve. We'll assess your skin tone and hair type — which determines how we'll tailor your treatment — and walk you through a realistic plan: how many sessions you're likely to need, how they'll be spaced, and what results to expect.
This is also your time. Ask us anything. There's no pressure to commit to anything on the spot, and no upselling — just honest guidance so you can decide with confidence.
If Needed: A Patch Test
Not everyone needs a patch test, and we don't run one as a routine box-check. When there's a valid reason to confirm how your skin will respond before treating — for example, a history of skin reactions, certain skin conditions or medications, or a specific concern that comes up during your consultation — we'll perform a quick patch test first. It's a brief pulse of the laser on a small area that lets us see how your skin reacts and fine-tune your settings accordingly.
Whether a patch test is right for you is a clinical judgment our provider makes with your safety in mind — part of treating laser as the medical procedure it is, under the oversight of our medical director.
Step 2: The Treatment Itself
Here's what actually happens when treatment begins — and it's far less dramatic than most people imagine. You'll be given protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the light. Then your provider moves the handpiece across the treatment area in sections, delivering quick pulses of laser energy.
Most people describe the sensation as a brief, warm snap — like a rubber band lightly flicking the skin — rather than real pain. Our Lumenis Splendor X has built-in cooling that takes the edge off considerably, so it stays comfortable throughout. You might notice a faint warmth or a slight scent; that's normal. And it's fast: small areas like the underarms take just a few minutes, while larger areas like the legs take longer but still move quickly thanks to the device's large treatment spot.
Right After Your Session
It's completely normal for the treated area to look a little pink or slightly raised — a bit like mild sunburn or temporary goosebumps around the follicles. This is a good sign that the treatment is working, and it usually settles within a few hours to a day. You can return to your normal day right away; there's no real downtime. We'll let you know what's expected versus anything worth calling us about.
Caring for Your Skin the First Day or Two
Aftercare is simple, and the headline is be gentle and respect the sun. For the first 24 to 48 hours, skip hot showers, saunas, intense workouts, and exfoliation, keep the area out of direct sun, and wear a broad-spectrum mineral SPF 30+. We'll send you home with complete instructions, so you're never guessing.

When Will You See Results?
Here's the expectation to set going in: you won't walk out hair-free, and that's exactly how it should work. Over the one to two weeks after your session, the treated hairs will gradually shed — you may notice what looks like regrowth, which is actually the hairs falling out. Because hair grows in cycles, lasting results come from a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, with most people needing around six to eight. Each session targets more follicles in their active growth phase, and the results build steadily from there.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I get treated at my first appointment, or is it just a consultation?
Your first visit always includes a consultation, where we assess your skin and hair and build your plan. Whether treatment happens that same day depends on your plan — and if we determine a patch test is needed first, we'll confirm how your skin responds before any full treatment. We'll walk you through exactly what to expect for your situation.
Do I need to shave before my first laser hair removal appointment?
Yes. Shave the treatment area about 24 hours beforehand so the surface is clean but the follicle stays intact. Avoid waxing, plucking, or depilatory creams for about four weeks before, since the laser needs the root to target.
What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable and easy to adjust for the area being treated — you may change into a gown or simply expose the treatment area. The day of, come with clean skin and no lotion, makeup, or deodorant on the area.
How long does the first appointment take?
The consultation and patch test together are usually quick. If treatment is performed, the time depends on the area — small areas like the underarms take just a few minutes, while larger areas like the legs take longer.
Does the first session hurt?
Most people describe it as a brief, warm rubber-band snap rather than pain. The Splendor X's built-in cooling keeps it comfortable, and sessions are fast.
Can I get laser hair removal if I have a tan or a deeper skin tone?
Avoid sun and self-tanner in the weeks before your visit, since freshly tanned skin isn't ideal for treatment. As for skin tone, our Splendor X includes a wavelength that lets us safely treat a wide range of skin tones — we'll assess yours at your consultation and tailor the settings accordingly.
