The few days right after a laser session are when your skin is most sensitive — and a little care during that window protects both your skin and the results you're investing in. Here's everything you need to know, from the moment you leave your appointment to how you care for your skin between sessions.

Right After Your Session: What's Normal

It's completely normal for the treated area to look a little pink and feel warm, a bit like mild sunburn, and you may notice small raised bumps around the follicles. This is a healthy sign that the treatment did its job, and it usually settles within a few hours to a day. There's no real downtime — you can head right back to your day — but the first 24 to 48 hours are when the do's and don'ts below matter most.

The First 24–48 Hours

Do:

Soothe the area with a cool compress or a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer if it feels warm.
Keep it clean and dry, and wear loose, breathable clothing to avoid friction on treated areas.
Wear SPF on any treated skin that will see daylight (more on this below).
Stay cool and let your skin calm down.

Don't:

No heat — skip hot showers and baths, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs.
No intense exercise or heavy sweating, which can irritate freshly treated skin.
No sun or tanning, including tanning beds and self-tanner.
Don't pick, scratch, or exfoliate the area, and let any bumps settle on their own.
Skip harsh products on the area for a few days — retinoids, exfoliating acids, and strongly fragranced products.
Hold off on makeup over treated facial areas for about 24 hours.

The Florida Sun Factor

If there's one rule to take seriously, it's sun protection — and here in Central Florida, that's a year-round commitment, not a summer one. Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to UV, and sun exposure during your treatment series is the most common cause of temporary pigment changes. So keep treated skin out of direct sun, cover up when you're outside, and wear a daily broad-spectrum mineral SPF 30+ throughout your entire series. It protects your skin and keeps your results looking clean and even.

The Shedding Phase: Days 3 to 14

Here's the part that surprises people and prompts a lot of unnecessary worry: in the one to two weeks after your session, it will look like the hair is growing back. It isn't. What you're seeing is the treated hairs shedding — working their way out of the follicle and falling away. It can look like stubble or fine regrowth, but it's a completely normal and expected part of the process, and a sign it's working.

After the first few days, you can gently exfoliate the area to help the shedding hairs release more easily. Don't pluck or scrub aggressively — a soft exfoliation is all it takes.

Between Sessions: The Golden Rule

This is the one between-session rule that matters most: you can shave, but never wax, pluck, thread, or epilate. Shaving only removes hair at the surface and leaves the follicle intact for your next treatment. Waxing and plucking pull out the root — which is exactly what the laser needs to target — so they'll sabotage your results. Shave as often as you like between visits, and plan to shave the area about 24 hours before your next session. Keep up your sun protection the whole way through.
